By Antwaun J. Parrish U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command

REDSTONE ARSENAL, Alabama—In September, Maj. Gen. Todd Royar, U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command commanding general, appointed a chief data and analytics officer and established the AMCOM Data and Analytics Center of Excellence.

Donald Nitti, deputy to the commanding general, briefed the DACoE effort during the Redstone update Nov. 5. Nitti serves as the data and analytics governance executive champion.

Joyce Myers currently serves as the AMCOM chief data and analytics officer. She will lead a team whose focal purpose is to establish, formalize and maintain governance around data and analytics processes.

Data and analytics governance will allow the command to implement best practices and more effectively manage the availability, usability, integrity and security of data and its analysis based on internal standards and policies .

"The DACoE will provide centralized oversight and management of data processes, roles, policies, standards, metrics and workforce development related to ensuring the effective and efficient use of information across the command while supporting decentralized analysis and execution by the functional community," said Myers.

Myers went on to state that the AMCOM command team understands the importance of recognizing and leveraging data as an asset and that data analytics can provide an enormous value.

"While AMCOM already receives and interacts with large volumes of data related to all of our business areas, the command knows that by implementing our data and analytics governance program, we will be able to improve the quality and trustworthiness of our data, improve cross-functional collaboration, optimize and improve operational readiness, to the Army and identify and address critical skills gaps," said Myers.

AMCOM’s DACoE will work in direct collaboration with functional business owners, data stewards, subject matter experts, and information management and technology professionals from all staff, subordinate organizations, and depots across the command.

According to Myers, this is an effort to provide the workforce with a standardized structure and policies that will allow leaders to make evidence based decisions using trusted data and information.
